EdX is the most sophisticated and academic platform for free online education, a joint project of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Harvard University and the University of Berkeley.
Now several dozens of the world's leading universities are participating in the program, including MIT itself and Harvard University, as well as Cornell University, Caltech, Berkeley University, Paris-Sorbonne University.
The EdX teaching methodology is not much different from other projects: lectures, divided into modules lasting up to 10 minutes, alternate with exercises for better assimilation of the material. When an incorrect answer is received, the program analyzes the error and issues recommendations for its correction.
The courses are quite complex and require regular allocation of time to study the lessons. Therefore, on the one hand, EdX has the smallest percentage of course graduates compared to other platforms, but on the other hand, EdX certificates are also quoted higher. There are numerous subjects to choose from. Various subject areas offered in EDX architecture, biology, arts and culture, life sciences, chemistry, business management, communications, data analysis, computer science, economics, design and finance.
EdX has a prominent lineage, although it is fairly new. This platform was launched in 2012. EdX collaborates with universities as well as renowned professors to offer courses in various subjects curated by experts. Flexibility is offered regarding the time spent on the course. many platforms offer courses at low cost and even for free. If the courses offered are peer based, they can lead to more discussion and student participation. Online learning can be easily accessed due to its flexibility and low cost.
Those students who showed good results in the course of study and successfully passed the final exams can receive a confirming certificate. It will be issued under the brand of the university where the course came from, i.e. either MIT, or Harvard, or Berkeley.
Education on EdX is free, however, if you decide to donate to the project, you will receive a paid certificate (Certificate of Achievement), which differs from the free certificate (Honor Code Certificate) in that it is issued after verifying the identity of the student who took the course. The free certificate looks a little different, but also in PDF format and can also be checked on the EdX portal. The cost of a paid certificate can reach $100 per course.
For free education, when you are offered to make a donation when enrolling in a course, select the line “Why do I have to pay? What if I don't meet all requirements? Clicking will expand additional information. Scroll through it, and towards the end you will see a checkmark "Select Honor Code Certificate". Put a tick there, in the appeared free field you will be asked to explain - why? You can write about a severe economic crisis or leave the field blank.
EDX is an advanced online learning platform. There are many free courses and paid ones. Certification courses for credit programs vary in price range, but are quite affordable. If a course is "chosen", it will have a price tag. There are no fixed prices for courses. Some may cost $50 for a certificate. Courses included in a college degree program or credits cost several hundred. The cost of some joint certification programs will be intermediate. edX has an analogue of Coursera specializations - Micromasters Programs. This is a series of Master's level courses. For example, there is a Columbia University Micro-MA in Artificial Intelligence that costs $1,200 (4 courses of $300 each), and a Micro-MA in Android Application Development costs $1,000 (5 courses of $200 each). However, all courses without obtaining a document can be taken for free.
